I Want a Blog – Now What?

OK, you read my last blog post and you’re ready for your own blog. What now? Good question! Here’s my short and sweet answer: use blogging software named WordPress on a hosting site called wordpress.com. You can do this by yourself or you can enlist the help of someone like me. (Naturally, I think hiring someone just exactly like me has some advantages but that’s between you and the CFO.)

If you do an internet search for blogging software you’ll find many choices. Examples include Blogger, Squarespace, Movable Type, Typepad, WordPress and others. You could make your selection by embarking on a thorough technical review of all of these packages with detailed comparisons of features and functions. Or, you could make a purely business decision. Over 25 million people have chosen WordPress for their blog. Business blogs that use WordPress include eBay Ink, Carnival Cruise Lines News, Inside Blackberry, SAP.info, The Ford Story, Forbes Blogs, Ben and Jerry’s Blog and many more. Do these facts prove that WordPress is the best blogging software? No, of course not. But they do show that WordPress is a widely used package that has been selected by some of the largest companies in the world. New consultants don’t really have the time for detailed technical reviews when they’re first getting started. WordPress will do the job and it will do it very well. Your Own Blog – A Consultant’s Best Friend?

Starting a new consulting business is not for the faint of heart. It’s fun and it’s rewarding but there are tough decisions and obstacles at every turn. You have to select a business ownership type (e.g., sole proprietorship, corporation, etc.), set up a business bank account, find an accountant, choose a graphic designer and pick a logo, get business cards, build a web site and write its content, determine your pricing, determine how you will get paid, and figure out how to market yourself. The last item is key. You have to figure out how to market yourself because when you are an independent consultant what you’re selling is yourself.

So, how do you market yourself? Well, that’s a big topic and many books address it in detail. However, I would like to make one suggestion; seriously consider a blog. Here’s why: Continue reading
